SteveKarstensen post below: me too started as complete noob and exactly to create small intro and shorts. Also I fear the difference in the forum support, my feeling is they are really different. Curios anyway to confront the two approaches. Possible outome will be probably that yes GPU particles are nice but a proper workflow is more important. HFP was a real discovery and made a lot of difference for me, but I'm a bit dissatisfied with the particle system and for the upcoming intro will check against Unreal Engine. Using occasionally Mixcraft for audio editing, and discovered the beautiful Millumin for live show control. Really avoid GIMP, unusable from my point of view.
Using Paint.NET and discover more and more useful plugins, hundered available. Tested all the big one and prefer Edius for the speed but not for the workflow. But I'm transitioning more and more on HFP editor. I still use PowerDirector as main NLE, just didn't feel his limits for the small clips I'm doing. My 2 cent from my small experience ( in effort, time is passing since I came in this forum for the fist time!).
